Butlers are a somewhat diverse group of people. We can be found in many countries around the world working for a variety of people in private homes, hotels, resorts, and wherever else our centuries old profession is needed. I say centuries old because as far as I am aware, the earliest reference to my profession is the book of Genesis, in the Bible (Genesis, chapter 40.)
Butlers have 2 items that are important in their everyday, working life, bells and pantries, the former of which are usually located in the latter. In Victorian England, the butler pantry was out of the way, in the basement and bells were situated above the door. Each room of the residence had its own assigned bell and when the bell rang, the butler would know where his presence was required.
In this day and age, most modern homes are equipped with hi tech' gadgets that allow communication between employer and butler but for many of us, we miss the simpler days when all one had to do was ring a bell to get our attention. Bells are intriguing and appealing attention getters, whether it be the bells in the butler pantry, or the butler ringing a small hand bell at the table to bring his charges to their meal. Remember, intriguing and appealing attention getters.
The butler pantry is the operations center of any fine home, hotel, or resort. It is where the butler is able to work behind the scenes to ensure the lives of his employers or guests are made easier. Contained within the pantry is every gadget, every item, every single thing that is required to allow the butler to do his job efficiently and professionally, including those attention getting bells.
